Six Boys Killer
Heart ending Accident on the Lehigh Valley Railroad Today,
Only one Boy out of a Party of Seven, Escapes Instant Death
The most heartrending accident that ever occurred in the Lehigh
Valley took place on the Lehigh Valley Railroad above Chain
Dam at about 12:30 this afternoon, when the down passenger
train due at Easton at 12:45, struck and killed six Easton
boys, ranging from twelve to fifteen years, who were walking
on the track on their way home.
Manning Garis, an Argus carrier, and a stepson of Charles
Fry, of Washington Street.
The boys were walking on the railroad on their way home. A
coal train going up the other track prevented the engineer
of the passenger train from seeing the boys until it was too
late. The engine was the "J.H. Wilhelm," no. 371.
The engineer gave the alarm and did all in his power to stop
the train, but the distance was so short that the boys although
they made a desperate effort to get off the track, were struck
by the engine and hurled away. The train was immediately stopped
and when the unfortunate youths were picked up and place in
the baggage car, all were dead but young Garis, who breathed
his last as the train pulled into the Easton station.

The Funerals
All the boys, with the exception of young Garis, will be buried
in the Easton Cemetery.
The funeral of Manning F. Garis, aged fourteen, will take
place from the residence of his step-father, Charles Frey,
at 8 p.m. Services at Memorial M.E. Church, Ferry Street, above
Tenth. Interment at Hay's Cemetery, South Easton. Rev. Mill
of the Second-Street M. E. Church , will officiate.
